In May 2024, I had the pleasure of being invited to teach my workshop A Site-Specific Creative Approach to 2nd and 3rd Year dance students at the PERA School of Performing Arts – GAU in Cyprus.

This workshop explores the unique process of creating performance work that is inherently tied to a specific location. In site-specific work, the space itself—whether a public environment, an unusual venue, or an unconventional setting—becomes a vital part of the artistic process. Artists are invited to navigate “uncharted territories,” confronting new challenges and embracing the creative potential of the unknown.

A Site-Specific Creative Approach guides participants through a flexible, research-led method of developing work in response to place. Through a series of practical and imaginative tasks, students investigate and respond to unfamiliar spaces, conducting primary research and engaging with the unpredictability that defines site-specific creation. The workshop encourages curiosity, adaptability, and a deeper sensitivity to the interplay between body, space, and environment.

It was inspiring to share this approach with such an engaged group of emerging artists at PERA and to witness their unique interpretations of site-based performance.
